Creating stories

An extract of Cora’s writing work that ranges from audition monologues to full-length plays and beyond can be read through New Play Exchange.
During the pandemic, her work has been performed with the National Youth Theatre, UK, at the recital of the Master of Music at Fontys University in Tilburg, the Netherlands and at Perform for Pride International in Vancouver, Canada. Students based in the United States, Singapore, Malaysia and the Netherlands have been using her original monologues in classes with Broadway Weekends.
She has also engaged with the company It’s a Dud that presents new work to central London audiences. Cora is part of the theatremaker collective at the Cockpit Theatre in London and has shown extracts of her work on the theatres’ main stage and in the studio.
“Showering”, her newest play, was performed at the Tara Theatre in London (Off-West End) in June 2022.
Directed by Heather Kirk, her one-woman show ‘Marriage with benefits – a theatrical TED talk, or an unhinged piece of theatre’ was showcased at the Vaults and as part of the event series ‘New Stuff’ as well as ‘Theatre in the Pound’ at the Cockpit Theatre in London. This upcoming August, ‘Marriage with benefits’ will come to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for a month-long run, directed by Ferelith Kingston. Details TBA.

From writing to directing and even producing you wear a lot of hats when it comes to the creation of this show! What got you interested in these sides of the theatre industry? (…)
I’ve always been curious to try out new things and different paths on my creative journey. Although I do love and savour performing and writing, I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanics behind the finished product seen onstage to inform my artistic practice. By wearing multiple hats for this particular production, I get to look at the play from different angles which is really exciting. I love experiencing how the performers embody the characters that have just been scribbles on sticky notes way back – as a writer and as a director. All the hats on top of each other is a balance act but seeing how it all comes together is undoubtedly worth it. Having more knowledge on how different sides of the theatre industry operate, I have greater appreciation for the work that every involved person is doing. (…)
Inspiration is such a big word but can happen in the smallest and most unexpected moments. Even events like seeing a show myself, reading a (non-)fiction book, or hiking up and down the cliffs on Howth, strolling through the tidal flat at Dublin Bay, or thinking about the news while washing my hair in the show – that’s literally how the process for Showering started. Being offline and observing the world you’re living in gives you already a lot to work with, in my opinion. But inspiration also comes from action, for instance engaging with people or the space you’re in. After all, I think inspiration is whatever “thing”, or moment, or person that creates an idea or triggers you to imagine a “what if” which gets you started. And then, a pin board, sticky notes and markers are usually a good bet to visualise these thoughts and ideas to eventually create a story.
“Showering – A conversation with Cora Frank” The Deskbound Dramatic 09.06.2022
I want to create authentic dialogue and three-dimensional characters by infusing moments of comedy, whilst tackling difficult topics.
I want my art to delve into diverse narratives, prompting critical reflection on varied perspectives. My work seeks to engage audiences in a thoughtful exploration of opinions, encouraging a deeper understanding of the complexities inherent in human experiences.
I want my artistic projects to give audience members a platform to escape, think, generate new thoughts and step into a more open conversation.
